Paul Pomerantz retired as CEO of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) in 2023 after a 45-year career in health care. “I became intimately involved with FAER at ASA and worked with their leadership over the years to improve collaboration between ASA and FAER,” he says. “My very first project was in 2014 to facilitate FAER’s move from Minneapolis to ASA’s new headquarters in Schaumburg, Illinois.”
To ensure his support for our mission continues beyond his lifetime, Paul has made a bequest to FAER in his will. “Research funded by FAER—often research that is then funded by the National Institutes of Health or other federal grants—has taught us so much about brain health, pain medicine, the risks and benefits of surgery in the elderly, and much more,” he says. “This is especially important now, given the challenges emerging with federal funding of research.”
As part of his work with FAER, Paul met regularly with Dr. Jim Eisenach (FAER President, 2016-2023). “We discussed many things about FAER, its mission and programs, and the opportunities in front of it,” Paul says. “Science and engagement of young researchers represent the future of the specialty and of health care for all of us. As a senior myself, I am gratified to understand the important contribution of this specialty.”
Paul encourages others to consider making a planned gift to support FAER’s future. “There is no better feeling than making the decision about a legacy gift,” he concludes. “You have the opportunity to help future generations of young researchers and, by extension, countless patients.”
